Georges St-Pierre’s Disapproval of Popular UFC Matchmaking Strategy
Georges St-Pierre, a renowned figure in MMA, has expressed his disapproval of a common approach used by UFC matchmakers when arranging fights.
After that fight, St-Pierre chose not to compete again, opting to retire on his own terms and participate only in matches that aligned with his goals. He believes that other aging fighters should follow a similar approach.
In many cases, the UFC tends to pair older fighters against younger, ambitious opponents in matchups designed to symbolize the passing of the torch. Unfortunately, this strategy often results in defeat for the more experienced fighter. Instances such as Frankie Edgar’s loss to Chris Gutierrez, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua’s defeat against Ihor Potieria, and Anthony Smith’s recent stoppage loss to Zhang Mingyang serve as examples. While there are exceptions, like Robbie Lawler’s memorable knockout victory over Niko Price, the younger fighter typically emerges victorious in these scenarios.
St-Pierre advocates for a different perspective, urging aging fighters not to succumb to the pressure of passing the torch. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of retiring at the right time and on one’s own terms. During an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, St-Pierre expressed his strong views on the matter, stating, “If you retire on a winning streak, they tell you pass the torch. F**k that. Don’t pass the torch. Retire on your turn, not on their turn. It’s a selfish sport, you know? You have to be selfish. When you feel it’s time to retire? Retire.”
Reflecting on his own decision to retire, St-Pierre emphasized the significance of recognizing when the time is right to step away from the sport. He expressed contentment with his choice and highlighted the importance of making decisions based on personal conviction rather than external pressures.
Georges St-Pierre’s stance on this issue raises important questions about the dynamics of aging fighters in the UFC and the significance of retiring on one’s own terms. What are your thoughts on St-Pierre’s perspective?
