WWE Files to Maintain Trademark for Hall of Famer’s In-Ring Name
WWE has taken steps to secure its trademark on the name “Edge,” despite the fact that the former star now competes under his real name, Adam Copeland, in AEW. The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) database search revealed that WWE had initially allowed the trademark to expire. The USPTO marked the application as abandoned on April 22, 2025, after WWE failed to respond promptly to inquiries arising from its original filing in November 2024.
Following a document dated January 6, 2025, WWE was given a three-month window to respond. With no response forthcoming, the trademark was considered abandoned. However, WWE revived the filing on May 1. The USPTO acknowledged the updated application, confirming that it had met the minimum filing requirements and had been assigned to an examiner. It was also noted that if the application had lapsed due to a failure to submit a timely statement of use, it would be referred to the intent to use unit.
This recent filing underscores WWE’s commitment to retaining ownership of the “Edge” name, a moniker closely linked to Copeland’s illustrious career in the WWE Hall of Fame. Since transitioning to AEW, Copeland has alternated between using his real name and the nickname “Cope.”
