When Ronda Rousey made her WWE debut, fans were thrilled to see her in the ring full time. However, the former UFC Bantamweight Champion quickly became a polarizing figure in WWE. Despite a promising start teaming with Kurt Angle at WrestleMania 34, Rousey faced backlash from fans and fellow wrestlers.
The turning point came during her feud with Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair in 2019. The tension spilled over onto social media, blurring the lines between storyline and reality. Rousey’s controversial comments on her YouTube channel, where she criticized wrestling as “fake,” further alienated fans and colleagues.
Wrestlers like WWE Hall of Famer Booker T and Dutch Mantell took issue with Rousey’s attitude and comments. Booker T criticized Rousey for disrespecting the women backstage, while Mantell questioned her commitment to the business. Rousey’s stint on “Total Divas” also drew criticism from some within the industry.
Becky Lynch, one of Rousey’s biggest rivals, engaged in a heated social media feud with the former UFC star. Their clash culminated in a historic main event at WrestleMania 35, where Lynch emerged victorious. Despite their on-screen rivalry, Lynch expressed empathy for Rousey’s struggles in WWE.
Former WWE creative writer Freddie Prinze Jr. and current GCW World Champion Effy also voiced their criticisms of Rousey. Prinze called one of Rousey’s matches “unwatchable,” while Effy slammed her in-ring abilities and controversial statements outside of wrestling.
Even industry veterans like Theodore Long and Eric Bischoff had reservations about Rousey’s contributions to WWE. Long questioned Rousey’s dedication to wrestling, while Bischoff labeled her as overrated in the industry. Former WWE and UFC commentator Jimmy Smith also criticized Rousey, calling her a toxic presence backstage.
Despite her accomplishments in MMA and WWE, Rousey’s tenure in the wrestling world was met with mixed reactions from her peers and industry insiders.
